Concert For NY
2001-10-21 @ 2:11 a.m.

Ok, I'm over being angry for now (see previous entry if you don't know what I mean by that)...

Watched the Concert For New York City tonight...it was cool. The whole audience was 6000 emergency workers and their families...firefighters, police, iron workers, EMT's, etc. So many of them were all decked out in their dress uniforms, which must feel so good after weeks of mucking around at Ground Zero, to get all cleaned up and go to a huge concert celebrating their efforts.

David Bowie opened, it was beautiful. His second song was "Heroes". The Goo Goo Dolls were awesome, great live performers. But you could kind of tell that a lot of the audience aren't that familiar with their music...same thing with Macy Gray.

They had celebrities introducing the next band, and they would be on stage with some of the "real people"...the rescue workers...and telling some of their stories. Most were great about putting the attention on the "real people". Jim Carrey was kind of an asshole, he barely talked about or to the people on stage with him...just wanted the attention on him. And Richard Gere went off on a thing about peace, and got booed by the audience.

The really cool parts were when some of the more classic bands came on. I'm not a big fan of The Who, but wow, they sounded perfect, and did a great show. And James Taylor was great. Again, I'm not crazy for John Cougar Mellancamp, but he sounded great. Mick Jagger rocked, but only did two songs. Elton John sang "Your Song", which I love. Billy Joel sounded good. But the cool part of all of those bands was the reaction from the people in the audience...they were so into it. Big strong guys and their wives, singing along, jumping up and down.

I had just had this overwhelming sense of, wow, these guys have been digging bodies out of rubble for five weeks, and here are the musicians they have been listening to all of their lives, playing a concert in tribute to THEM!

It was cool.

Adam Sandler came on as "OperaMan" and it was fucking hilarious.

And then, Paul...the only Paul...McCartney. "Let It Be" was cool, but ended up a little reminiscent of "We Are The World" when everyone joined him on the stage. But him alone on the piano singing "Yesterday" killed me. Beautiful.

It was cool. I watched it at work with a zillion other people, and it really felt like an event. I don't know if they raised much money, but I know the people there had a great night, and felt how much we appreciate them.
